Book the same week, the same cabin, even the same airline, and your fare can still swing by $150 or more depending on which Vietnamese airport lands on your ticket. That’s not luck. It’s route economics.

Vietnam has five airports that regularly show up in international search results: Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, Cam Ranh, and Phu Quoc. Each one has a different mix of airlines, competition, and seasonal demand, and that mix is what actually sets the price you see on your screen.

This guide breaks down what each airport does well, where the real deals hide, and how to turn that knowledge into cheap airfare to Vietnam instead of a guessing game.

Quick answer: Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi usually post the lowest long-haul fares because more airlines compete on those routes. Da Nang, Cam Ranh, and Phu Quoc can undercut both on regional Asia routes, especially from Seoul, Bangkok, or Singapore.

Why Your Airport Choice Changes the Price

Airfare isn’t set by distance. It’s set by how many airlines are fighting for your seat.

An airport with three carriers flying the same route almost always beats an airport served by one. That’s the whole story behind most cheap flights to Vietnam; it’s rarely about the date you fly; it’s about which gateway has the competition.

Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi are Vietnam’s two mega-hubs, each pulling in 50+ airlines. Da Nang, Cam Ranh, and Phu Quoc are smaller and more seasonal, which sometimes works against you and sometimes works in your favor, especially if your trip starts in Seoul, Bangkok, or Kuala Lumpur rather than the US or Europe.

Before you lock in dates, it’s worth checking cheap flight tickets to Vietnam across two or three airports side by side. A $600 fare into one city and a $420 fare into another, 45 minutes away by domestic hop, is a common find.

Ho Chi Minh City (SGN)

Tan Son Nhat is Vietnam’s busiest airport, and busy is exactly what keeps fares in check.

Average airfare: Fares from Europe tend to run lower than fares from the US, simply because more airlines fly the European routes. San Francisco is currently the only nonstop option from the United States, so US travelers often save by routing through a connecting hub instead.

Airline competition: Dozens of carriers serve Tan Son Nhat, spanning SkyTeam, Oneworld, and Star Alliance. Vietnam Airlines, VietJet Air, and Vietravel Airlines handle the bulk of the traffic, which keeps domestic and short-haul regional fares aggressive.

Best international routes: Nonstop service connects Ho Chi Minh City to Frankfurt, Munich, Paris, London, and Copenhagen on Vietnam Airlines and Air France, plus Dubai (Emirates), Doha (Qatar Airways), and Istanbul (Turkish Airlines). Travelers booking flights to Ho Chi Minh City Vietnam from North America usually connect through one of these cities.

Domestic connections: This is the country’s busiest domestic hub, with frequent same-day links to Hanoi, Da Nang, Phu Quoc, and Nha Trang handy if you’re comparing airport-hopping as a fare-saving trick.

Getting into the city: The airport sits about 7 kilometers from District 1, so a taxi or ride-hail app gets you downtown in 15–20 minutes.

Nearby attractions: Ben Thanh Market, the War Remnants Museum, and Mekong Delta day trips are all within easy reach.

Pro Tip: Vietnam is opening a second major airport, Long Thanh, later in 2026, roughly 40 km from the city. For now almost every flight still lands at Tan Son Nhat, but double-check your airport code when booking as this shifts.

Hanoi (HAN)

Noi Bai plays a similar role for northern Vietnam that Tan Son Nhat plays for the south: a genuine hub, not a secondary airport.

Average airfare: One-way fares into Hanoi commonly land somewhere in the $200–$400 range depending on the season and carrier, with the lowest months typically falling outside the Lunar New Year and summer peaks.

Airline competition: More than 50 airlines serve Hanoi from dozens of cities worldwide, and all three global alliances fly here. That density is a big reason cheap flights to Hanoi are easier to find than travelers expect.

Best international routes: Seoul, Bangkok, Singapore, Taipei, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Kuala Lumpur are the busiest regional connections, alongside direct long-haul service to London, Paris, and Frankfurt.

Domestic connections: Hanoi links directly to Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and Nha Trang multiple times a day, making it easy to fly in north and out south (or vice versa) without backtracking.

Getting into the city: Noi Bai is about 30 km out; the airport bus or a taxi takes roughly 45 minutes into the Old Quarter.

Nearby attractions: Hoan Kiem Lake, the Old Quarter’s food streets, and day trips to Ha Long Bay.

If your trip continues into Asia afterward, it’s worth comparing prices on a Vietnam-to-Taipei route before booking separate tickets; combining legs on one itinerary sometimes beats two one-ways. The same logic applies heading the other direction: a Vietnam-to-Amsterdam connection out of Hanoi can undercut booking Amsterdam as a separate trip entirely.

Common Mistake to Avoid: Travelers often price only their “main” destination airport and skip comparing Hanoi against Ho Chi Minh City for the same trip. On multi-city itineraries, checking both as your entry point can uncover a meaningfully cheaper routing.

Da Nang (DAD)

Central Vietnam’s main airport punches above its weight on regional Asia routes.

Average airfare: Domestic hops out of Da Nang are famously cheap, with short routes to Phu Quoc or Ho Chi Minh City often priced under $100 round-trip when booked ahead. International fares depend heavily on the route; Seoul and Incheon service is dense enough to keep prices competitive.

Airline competition: Around 40 airlines serve Da Nang. Vietnam Airlines operates the most departures, but VietJet and South Korea’s Tway Air add real competition on the Seoul corridor specifically.

Best international routes: Incheon (Seoul) is the single busiest international connection, followed by Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Bangkok, all workable if you’re building a Southeast Asia loop instead of flying in from the West.

Domestic connections: Da Nang connects several times daily to Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Phu Quoc, making it a practical midpoint for a north-to-south itinerary.
