London has six airports, and only one of them is the one everyone assumes they’ll land at. That assumption is expensive.

If you’ve been hunting for cheap flights to London England, and every fare keeps pointing you toward Heathrow, it’s worth pausing. Heathrow is the biggest and busiest of the bunch, and often the priciest. Four other airports Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, and London City sit within an hour of the city and regularly undercut it on airfare.

A cheaper ticket doesn’t always mean a cheaper trip, though. Transfer costs and journey time can eat that saving fast. Here’s how to weigh it properly.

Why the Airport You Land At Changes the Price

Airlines price routes based on where they’re allowed to fly, and Heathrow’s landing slots are some of the most expensive on earth. That cost gets passed into the ticket, which is why so many flights to London United Kingdom searches from budget carriers turn up Stansted or Luton instead.

A cheap flights to London UK search that only checks Heathrow is comparing itself against the priciest baseline in the city before you’ve even looked at transfers. Checking every UK arrival airport at once is the single biggest lever for saving money; see current fare options across the United Kingdom before you lock anything in.

Heathrow: London’s Big Hub

Heathrow (LHR) sits about 15 miles west of central London and carries more direct long-haul routes than any other UK airport. If a nonstop flight matters most, this is usually where you land.

Business travelers and anyone chasing a direct route drive most of the demand for flights to London Heathrow. Three transfer options get you into town, and the price gap between them is bigger than most people expect:

Transfer
Time to Center
Fare (One-Way)

Piccadilly line (Tube)
50–60 min
~£5.90

Elizabeth line
30–45 min
~£15.50

Heathrow Express
15 min
£10 (booked ahead) – £26 (walk-up)

Pro Tip: Book Heathrow Express 30+ days out and it drops from £26 to around £10, often cheaper than the Elizabeth line. Wait until you land, and it’s the priciest train in the city.

A strong airfare to London Heathrow deal can lose its edge fast once you add a walk-up train ticket and the drop-off charge. Price the whole journey, not just the flight.

The Budget Four: Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, London City

Each airport trades something for something else. None is “worse” than Heathrow; they’re built for different trips.

Airport
Distance
Best Rail Link
Time
Known For

Gatwick (LGW)
28 mi
Gatwick Express
~30 min
Long-haul + budget mix

Stansted (STN)
38 mi
Stansted Express
~50 min
Ryanair’s UK base, cheapest fares

Luton (LTN)
35 mi
Luton Airport Express
~35 min
easyJet, Wizz Air routes

London City (LCY)
6 mi
DLR
~22 min
Closest to center, business-friendly

⚠️ Common Mistake to Avoid: Booking the airport with the lowest sticker price without checking the transfer. A £30 saving into Stansted disappears fast if your hotel is a 90-minute crawl across town.

Fares and schedules shift throughout the year, so treat these as planning figures and confirm the live price before you travel.

Which Airport Fits Your Trip?

A traveler booking Toronto to London UK flights for a two-week trip cares about different things than someone booking flights to London from NY for a four-day work trip.
